Safe, Healthy Skin

As the largest organ of the body and principal line of defense, our skin protects us from the elements and wards off disease. Although the skin has an incredibly effective internal system, without the proper protection, overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can make the skin vulnerable to skin cancer. At MG Plastic Surgery in Scottsdale, AZ, we make sure that your skin is safe and healthy.

What Is Skin Cancer Removal?

If your skin is diagnosed with a potentially harmful cancerous lesion, surgical removal will be necessary to restore your skin to its optimal health. At MG Plastic Surgery, we employ the safest techniques to ensure that the cancer is completely removed, the wound is properly cared for, and the scarring is minimized and concealed.

How Is Skin Cancer Identified?

Regular skin exams can help your physician identify abnormal moles, spots, or other growths that could be at risk. If you notice any of the following “ABCDEs” – or potential signs of skin cancer – you will want to inform Dr. Gigena immediately.

  • Asymmetry: One side looks different from the other – a healthy mole is symmetrical
  • Border: Blurry, jagged, or irregularly shaped edges
  • Color: Different colors or shades in one mole, such as red, tan, black, brown, white, or blue
  • Diameter: Larger diameter than the size of a pencil eraser
  • Evolving: Size, color, or shape changes over time and looks different from other moles on the body

How Is the Procedure Performed?

Suspicious skin lesions may require a biopsy to determine if they are pre-cancerous or cancerous. For lesions that are proven to be cancerous, surgery may be the indicated treatment option, and the exact procedure will depend on the tumor's size, type, depth, and location. More advanced skin cancers may require additional treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Excision Surgery

Direct surgical excision is often the optimal choice for a small lesion located on an area that is not cosmetically sensitive – such as the back. This procedure can be performed using local anesthesia in most cases. While removing the cancerous lesion, a thin margin of healthy surrounding skin is added to the specimen to ensure its total removal. Dr. Gigena will then close the resulting wound with sutures.
